I'm trying to decide if it would be faster to go through all the dungeons I can in this playthrough hoping that one chest is out in the open like this one, or if I should just try again from the beginning in the next playthrough. I was so excited to see it thinking that was the one I was missing, but I went to go see the Katz and was disheartened to see 99.6%. I say "somehow" because it wasn't the least bit hidden, it was right in the middle of the only path through and contained 2500 gald. While running through Meltokio sewers just now grinding out pellets to complete the figurine book, I found a chest I somehow missed. I checked just after Vinheim and was at 98.4% then remembered that I needed to go grab that. In this case, there's no way to know whether the editing was a form of discretionary sanitizing, or just necessary translation work. I don't care if it's meaningful for the game because at core is the principle of the edit being done. I don't like unnecessary edits big or small. Such a translation would commit a cardinal sin, which is to not just omit information, but give off a wrong idea in its place. Otherwise, what would be funny in JP culture and language might fall flat for English speakers, or worse, give the impression that a character is sexist or similar. The translators are absolutely correct in saying that they have to take culture into account. There's no way to easily provide reader notes for the literal joke, so all you pretty much can expect is the localized joke.
The translators were talking about the need to make changes in the context of jokes.
